A car accident is stressful. So you don't forget anything important, here's a practical checklist.

At the scene of the accident

Secure the accident site, provide first aid and call the emergency services if anyone is injured. Document the scene with photographs from several angles. Exchange contact and insurance details with the other party involved. Complete the European Accident Statement.

After the accident

Report the accident to your insurer. In the case of a third-party liability claim (where the other party is at fault), instruct an independent motor vehicle assessor – the costs are borne by the other party's insurer. Do not have the vehicle repaired before the inspection. If required, consult a lawyer specialising in traffic law.

For personal injuries and significant property damage, you should definitely call the police. For minor body damage, a police call is not strictly required – however, a police accident report can be helpful for damage settlement.

Can I have my vehicle repaired immediately after the accident?

No – wait with the repair until the expert report has been completed. Premature repair can lead to not all damages being documented and you losing important claims.
